'Smart' Mice Teach Scientists About Learning Process, Brain Disorders
The key in this study was being able to "knock out" the gene for Cdk5 only in the brain, and only when the mice were adults. This technique, only recently developed and called conditional knockout, allows much more sophisticated experiments than traditional knockout, which entirely eliminates the gene. "Being able to turn a gene off throughout a brain is a really advanced thing to do," Dr. Bibb said. "It's been shown that it can be done, but we put the system together and actually applied it."

Hyvää pyyhepäivää

Superhuman Imagination
Vinge: I think that if the Singularity can happen, it will. There are lots of very bad things that could happen in this century. The Technological Singularity may be the most likely of the noncatastrophes. Except for their power to blow up the world, I think governments would have a very hard time blocking the Singularity. The possibility of governments perverting the Singularity is somewhat more plausible to me.

Brain 'Pacemaker' Tickles Your Happy Nerve
Once healed from surgery, patients report their voices get gravelly during the pulse cycle, usually five of every 30 seconds. If that becomes a problem -- during public speaking, for example -- the device is designed with an off-switch: The patient can suspend the unit by placing a magnet over it, Dougherty says.

Epäpuhtaan urheilun puolesta

Videota Oscar Pistoriuksesta. Ehkäpä "puhtaan" ihmisurheilun puolesta puhuvat tahot rajoittavat itsensä lopulta olemattomiin, kun ihmiset katsovatkin mieluummin open source -superatleettien olympialaisia, joissa saa viritellä itseään vapaasti eikä kilpailijoita syrjitä varaosien perusteella.

Gel made from patient's blood speeds healing

A closer look at nanomedicine
While the medical applications of nanosurgery could be seen as just advanced techniques of restoring and maintaining human health, an entirely possible scenario could be the creation of superhuman capabilities (so-called transhumans). The issues go beyond what's already being discussed in the context of gene therapy because future surgical procedures could involve the implantation of nanoscale sensors and chips that would enhance existing human capabilities, for instance being able to see in the dark thanks to implanted ultrasound sensors.

For these researchers, the aim is not to find feasible solutions but to do good science that provides a standard against which to judge the less good, or flatly foolish, schemes that might otherwise accrete around the idea. Cicerone points to quack schemes for ozone replacement in the 1980s as the sort of thing that needs to be forestalled: back then, he says, "poor ideas got as far as they did because of [the community's] silence."

Äly jättää jälkeensä kiiltävien vempainten ketjun

Vielä yksi Yudkowskyn haastatteluvideo.

Discover Magazine: Suspended Animation
Freak survival stories like Uchikoshi’s pop up every so often in the news. In May 1999, a female Norwegian skier was submerged in icy water for over an hour and deemed clinically dead—no heartbeat, no respiration, and a core temperature of 57ºF—only to snap back to life in the hospital. In February 2001, doctors revived a Canadian toddler whose heart had stopped beating for nearly two hours and whose body had cooled to 61ºF after she wandered outside, unnoticed, on a freezing night. These strange tales hint at what was, until quite recently, an underappreciated facet of our nature. Humans, it seems, can hibernate.

“Childhood Origins of Adult Resistance to Science”
Historians and creationism watchers have long noted several strong and quite reliable psychological generalizations that can be made about creationists – e.g., how creationists jump to conclusions based on what naively seems like “common sense” to them, an almost instinctual dualism- and design-based thinking, a place of pride for “childlike faith”, an old-fashioned Baconian attitude to science (Facts good! Theories bad!!), a severe difficulty with probabilities and other abstract topics, a severe case of typological thinking and an inability to even correctly conceptualize a particular proposed “transitional” organism, an amazingly uncritical acceptance and blind repetition of anything their own authorities say, etc… These generalizations apply to young-earthers right through to old-earth creationists (and therefore IDers, which are a mix of the two).

Avoimesti toiskykyinen

Wired: Mixed feelings
Direction isn't something humans can detect innately. Some birds can, of course, and for them it's no less important than taste or smell are for us. In fact, lots of animals have cool, "extra" senses. Sunfish see polarized light. Loggerhead turtles feel Earth's magnetic field. Bonnethead sharks detect subtle changes (less than a nanovolt) in small electrical fields. And other critters have heightened versions of familiar senses — bats hear frequencies outside our auditory range, and some insects see ultraviolet light. We humans get just the five. But why? Can our senses be modified? Expanded? Given the right prosthetics, could we feel electromagnetic fields or hear ultrasound? The answers to these questions, according to researchers at a handful of labs around the world, appear to be yes.

The I.A.A.F. must objectively define when prosthetic devices “go from therapy to enhancement,” Schneider said. The danger of acting hastily, she said, is “you deny a guy’s struggle against all odds — one of the fundamental principles of the Olympics.”

Clearly, Frankly, Unabashedly Disabled
Hollywood’s embrace of a franker depiction of disabilities is mirrored in everyday life in trends such as the jettisoning, by both child and adult amputees, of cosmetic covers for prosthetic legs. Instead, prosthetics experts say, many patients wear their legs openly, often customizing them with designs that are flaunted like tattoos.

The First Law of Nanobotics provides a general warning against underestimating the potential of Synthetic Biology and Artificial life by stating that nanobiotechnology will result in the complete elimination of the barrier between living and nonliving materials. That statement goes double for synthetic materials that share the same chemistry as the natural ones. The Second Law of Nanobotics explicitly states: It is not possible to ensure that devices created using the techniques of nanobiotechnology will only transmit or receive molecular information as intended by its human designers.

Robottikaveri

Bots on The Ground
"Sometimes they get a little emotional over it," Bogosh says. "Like having a pet dog. It attacks the IEDs, comes back, and attacks again. It becomes part of the team, gets a name. They get upset when anything happens to one of the team. They identify with the little robot quickly. They count on it a lot in a mission." -- The bots even show elements of "personality," Bogosh says. "Every robot has its own little quirks. You sort of get used to them. Sometimes you get a robot that comes in and it does a little dance, or a karate chop, instead of doing what it's supposed to do." The operators "talk about them a lot, about the robot doing its mission and getting everything accomplished." He remembers the time "one of the robots happened to get its tracks destroyed while doing a mission." The operators "duct-taped them back on, finished the mission and then brought the robot back" to a hero's welcome.

The Compatibility of Religious and Transhumanist Views of Metaphysics, Suffering, Virtue and Transcendence in an Enhanced Future - James Hughes vertailee erilaisten uskonnollisten konseptien yhteensopivuutta transhumanistisen filosofian kanssa. Transhumanistit eivät usko sieluun, pelastuksen odottaminen nähdään laiskotteluna, rukoilu on ajan tuhlausta, kirkot ovat rahan tuhlausta, tuomiopäivä merkitsee epäonnistumista, valitun kansan pääsy taivaaseen on epäoikeudenmukaista syrjintää ja jumalia pidettäisiin lähinnä vihollisina, jos yksikin niistä olisi olemassa, joten yhdistäminen vaatii melkoista silmien siristelyä tiukoilta länsimaisilta uskonnoilta. Rennommat kaukoidän uskonnot selviävät hieman vähemmällä.

Over the centuries, mankind has tried many ways of combating the forces of evil... prayer, fasting, good works and so on. Up until Doom, no one seemed to have thought about the double-barrel shotgun.

And now, if anything, he's gaining momentum as a cultural force: He has not one but two movies in the works - one a documentary about his career and ideas and the other an adaptation of his recent bestseller, The Singularity Is Near, which he's writing and co-producing (he's talking about a distribution deal with the people who brought you "The Day After Tomorrow").

Gene clue to longevity uncovered
A study using nematode worms (Caenorhabditis elegans) revealed that a gene called pha-4 played a key role. The team found worms that had their pha-4 genes removed showed no enhanced longevity while on the restricted diet. But they discovered that the opposite experiment - over-expressing levels of pha-4 in the worms - increased longevity when on the restricted diet. "This is the first gene we have found that is absolutely essential to the longevity response to dietary restriction," explained Dr Dillin. "We finally have genetic evidence to unravel the underlying molecular programme required for increased longevity in response to calorie restriction."

How do you get rid of the body of a dead astronaut on a three-year mission to Mars and back? When should the plug be pulled on a critically ill astronaut who is using up precious oxygen and endangering the rest of the crew? Should NASA employ DNA testing to weed out astronauts who might get a disease on a long flight? How do you cope with sexual desire among healthy young men and women during a mission years long?

Väärä taktiikka

To Treat the Dead
When someone collapses on the street of cardiac arrest, if he's lucky he will receive immediate CPR, maintaining circulation until he can be revived in the hospital. But the rest will have gone 10 or 15 minutes or more without a heartbeat by the time they reach the emergency department. And then what happens? "We give them oxygen," Becker says. "We jolt the heart with the paddles, we pump in epinephrine to force it to beat, so it's taking up more oxygen." Blood-starved heart muscle is suddenly flooded with oxygen, precisely the situation that leads to cell death. Instead, Becker says, we should aim to reduce oxygen uptake, slow metabolism and adjust the blood chemistry for gradual and safe reperfusion.
